Ronin Challenge 2025

In feudal Japan, a rōnin was a samurai who had no master. Viewed as a ‘wanderer’ or ‘a person of the waves (unrestrained),’ rōnin was someone who ‘found the way without belonging to one place.’

On November 3rd 2023 John G. Walsh created the rōnin challenge. He ‘wandered’ the Waterford greenway from Waterford city to Dungarvan and back, a distance of 93.6km, in 7 hours, 52 minutes and 34 seconds.

The 2025 edition of the rōnin challenge will take place on 6th September. The challenge is to traverse the greenway, there and back in under 8 hours (that's approximately a 5 minute per kilometre pace). All participants are required to be in a relay team.

All money raised will go to Waterford hospice foundation.

Are you a rōnin?

Thank you so much to David Cooke, Mike Conway and all our friends at OfficeMaster who very generously sponsored these signs for the Ronin Challenge changeover points on the Waterford Greenway.  It's all happening on Saturday September 6th, it's for a great cause, please donate!
